E308: Metal Gear Online "Gene Expansion" Dated

According to the Konami press conference yesterday, the first expansion will be released...wait for it...TODAY, JULY 17th! Keep your eyes peeled, it should be available for download sometime today. The new "Gene Expansion" will include three new maps, two new playable characters (including Meryl), and much, much more.

Metal Gear Online "Gene Expansion" Details

Konami has just spilled the beans about the first Metal Gear Online expansion dubbed the "Gene Expansion". The expansion will add a Rewards Shop to spend your in-game points on new gear, three new maps, the ability to play as female characters, a new "Survival" mode and two new playable playable characters: Meryl Silverberg and Johnny "Akiba". New Content Added for Metal Gear Online Beta

[This is actually old news.] Konami not only added a new map to the beta, but a new mode as well. The new map is called Midtown Maelstrom and is reminiscent of the area you see Old Snake sneaking through in the MGS4 trailer release at TGS last year. The new mode is called Sneaking Mission in which one player plays as Old Snake and the rest are put into two separate teams. The player who is Old Snake must collect all the dog tags of both teams, while both teams must Find Snake and eliminate him before he finds all the tags (while preventing the other teamfrom finding him). Sounds complicated? Yeah, but it's Metal Gear Solid. What'd you expect? For a better description, hit the official PlayStation.Blog now!

Metal Gear Online Beta Delayed; Planned for Friday

If you tried loggin in to the beta on Monday, you probably got an error message. Guess what: so did everybody else. Evidently, Konami did not anticipate such high traffic for their beta. Therefore, their servers can't handle it and as a result, the beta has been delayed. Konami has this statement on the official Metal Gear Online website:

"...we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected."

Konami is planning to have the servers up and running this Friday at midnight PST. Remember, it's planned - there's still a possibility that MGO may not be online this Friday. Naturally, Konami will extend the deadline of the beta to May 5, 2008.
