In an Interview with Kojima himself the creator of the legendary Metal gear solid series stated that the 50gb blu-ray was not big enough for MGS4. He even states that they had to compress some parts of the game to make it fit on the disc.
Kojima : I am not satisfied with the quality yet, however...there isn't enough space.
Interviewer: Not enough space..on..Blu-ray..?
Kojima: Yes.(laughs). Not enough space.
