Post Halloween Wrap up
So Halloween has come and passed, many of us dressed up, others went to the city to view the Halloween parade. A select few of us even went trick or treating……ok I went trick or treating but what does matter I got like a GARBAGE bag full of candy so I’m good.
Anyways to keep in the spirit of the season I started a playing a couple of Survival horror videogames, the term survival was first coined with the release of the popular Resident Evil created by Capcom, though technically there were older games like sweet home or Clock Tower namely Resident evil 4and silent hill 1 and 3. I’ve been a fan of the Resident evil series since resident evil 2 and I briefly played Silent Hill 3 in my sophomore year of high school.
Though both games belong to the genre of Survival horror and feature the same general themes (creepy environments, creatures jumping out at you from the darkness etc.) but even though they share the same genre both try different approaches at getting at the player.
Like in Resident evil 4 there is a section of the game that takes place in Laboratory as you wander through you come across one section that seems to be an operating room of some sort and you can see the body of a weird looking creature.
As you enter one room you hear a loud crash from the previous area the music then turns ominous and you begin hear heavy panting drawing nearer to your position as you turn around the door leading to the last area flies open.
Revealing a creature twice your size with glowing eyes slowly limping towards you and if you didn’t think that was bad enough the creature (fittingly called a regenerator) regenerates damaged body parts, making the regenerator difficult to defeat (even gets to the point that if you blow of the arms and legs it will still attack the player by snapping and jumping at you like a deranged crocodile.)
On the other end of the spectrum you have games like Silent hill that don’t depend on scare tactics, they take a more physiological route, like weird camera angles and sound effects and more importantly riddles to boggle and confuse the player. Anyways Silent Hill: Origins drops for the PSP this month and 2008 will see Resident evil 5. So keep an eye out for some of these titles in the next coming months and enjoy some of them if possible.
